Travel Medicine

Yellow Fever | Travel Medicine Clinic | Bondi Road

Ocean Medical Practice is a fully accredited Yellow Fever vaccination centre. Our Bondi doctors & GPs have a special interest in travel medicine and are well trained to help manage all your travel medicine needs. If you plan to go traveling, it is recommended that you see a GP at least 4 weeks prior to your departure date. This will ensure that you have adequate time to obtain protection before you travel.

For your convenience, we keep most common travel vaccines for adults and children including yellow fever, typhoid, hepatitis A and B, polio and cholera. For more information on the costs of vaccines and Yellow Fever Vaccine Availability (due to lack of stock), please contact our receptionist on 02 9386 9822 prior to booking your appointment.

Specific vaccines required for travel can vary depending on the destination, length of stay, and activities you plan to engage in. It is best to consult with your Travel Doctor for personalized recommendations. A list of common travel vaccines for consideration prior to travel is outlined below. Please note that this is a generalised list only and do not apply to specific travel plans.
  1. Hepatitis A: Recommended for all travellers to developing countries, where sanitation and hygiene may be poor.
  2. Hepatitis B: Recommended for travellers who may come in contact with blood or bodily fluids, including through sexual contact, sharing needles, or medical procedures.
  3. Typhoid fever: Recommended for travellers to areas with poor sanitation, where the disease is endemic.
  4. Yellow fever: Required for entry into some countries in Africa and South America, and recommended for travellers visiting rural areas where the disease is endemic.
  5. Japanese encephalitis: Recommended for travellers spending a month or more in rural areas of Asia, especially during the rainy season.
  6. Rabies: Recommended for travellers who may come into contact with animals, such as stray dogs or bats.
  7. Meningococcal disease: Recommended for travellers to areas with high rates of meningococcal disease, such as the meningitis belt in sub-Saharan Africa.
  8. Cholera: Recommended for travellers to areas with poor sanitation and hygiene, where outbreaks of cholera may occur.
  9. Influenza: Recommended for all travellers, as the flu can be easily transmitted in crowded areas.
  10. Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR): Recommended for travellers who have not been vaccinated or who have not had these diseases before.
Again, this is NOT an exhaustive list, and it is essential to consult your Bondi Travel Doctor/Travel GP for personalized recommendations based on your specific travel plans. If you're traveling last minute and don't have time for vaccinations, it is still important to have a chat to your doctor. Travel medicine is not only about getting vaccinated. Good travel hygeine can help you minimize jet lag, protect you against traveler's diarrhoea and infectious diseases like dengue fever, rabies and malaria. Your doctor can advise you on the best medications to take with you in case you get sick.
