World Immunisation Week 2025: Protecting Bondi Families, One Vaccine at a Time
Each year, World Immunisation Week is celebrated during the last week of April to promote the power of vaccines in protecting people of all ages from life-threatening diseases. In 2025, this global initiative continues to shine a light on the critical role immunisation plays in building healthy communities—especially here in Bondi.
At Ocean Medical Practice, our team of passionate female GPs and Bondi doctors are proud to support this campaign and help our patients from Bondi Road to the beaches stay protected and well-informed.
What is World Immunisation Week?
World Immunisation Week, led by the World Health Organization (WHO), raises awareness of the need for equitable and timely access to vaccines for all. This year’s theme focuses on “Humanly Possible: Immunisation for All,” highlighting how vaccines empower individuals and communities to live healthier, longer lives.
In Australia, this global campaign is supported by the National Immunisation Program (NIP), which provides free vaccines to eligible individuals to reduce the spread of preventable diseases and improve public health outcomes.
Concerning Immunisation Statistics in Australia
While Australia enjoys high overall immunisation rates, there are gaps that remain concerning:
- Only 66% of adults over 65 are vaccinated against the flu each year.
- Less than 50% of eligible adults have received the shingles vaccine.
- Childhood immunisation rates in some parts of NSW, including the Eastern Suburbs, have dropped slightly below the national target of 95%.
- Vaccine hesitancy has risen since the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly regarding newer vaccines like RSV.
At Ocean Medical Practice – Bondi’s local medical centre, our Bondi GPs & Bondi doctors work hard to improve these numbers by building trust, answering questions, and making vaccinations easy and accessible.
The Health Benefits of Immunisation at Every Age
Immunisation protects individuals and communities including (but not limited to):
- Infants and children (1–10 years): Preventing measles, whooping cough, polio, and meningococcal disease.
- Adolescents and young adults: Guarding against HPV, meningitis, and tetanus.
- Adults and older adults: Reducing the risk of severe influenza, pneumococcal disease, shingles, and now RSV.
Vaccination not only protects the individual—it also shields vulnerable members of the community who can’t be vaccinated due to medical conditions.
Key Vaccines Making a Difference in 2025
Some of the most impactful vaccines available this year include:
