Protect Your Child and Your Family with a Free Needle-Free Flu Vaccine at Ocean Medical Practice, Bondi
Winter has arrived across Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, and influenza is continuing to circulate throughout schools, childcare centres, sporting clubs and the wider community. If you have been meaning to organise your child’s flu vaccination but haven’t yet had the chance, it’s definitely not too late.
At Ocean Medical Practice Bondi, we are encouraging families across Bondi, Bondi Beach, Bondi Junction, North Bondi, Tamarama, Bronte, Bellevue Hill, Dover Heights, Rose Bay and Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs to protect their children with the FREE FluMist® nasal spray influenza vaccine, available for eligible children aged 2 to 17 years.
Unlike the traditional flu injection, FluMist® is a gentle nasal spray, making it an excellent option for children who are nervous about needles. Even better, eligible FluMist® consultations are bulk billed, meaning there is no out-of-pocket consultation fee for eligible Medicare card holders attending for an eligible vaccination consultation.
Although many people think they have “missed the flu season,” influenza often continues circulating well into winter and even spring. Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to reduce your child’s risk of becoming seriously ill and to help protect vulnerable members of the community.

Why Influenza Is More Serious Than Many Parents Realise
Influenza is not simply a heavy cold.
It is a highly contagious viral infection that affects the respiratory system and can lead to significant illness, particularly in young children.
Every year in Australia, influenza causes:
- Thousands of emergency department presentations
- Thousands of hospital admissions
- Serious respiratory infections
- Missed school and childcare
- Parents taking time away from work
- Significant strain on healthcare services
While most healthy children recover, influenza can occasionally cause severe complications requiring hospital treatment.
Importantly, children often spread influenza before they appear particularly unwell, meaning they unknowingly infect classmates, teachers, grandparents and other family members.
Vaccinating children is therefore one of the most effective ways to reduce influenza transmission throughout the community.
It’s Not Too Late to Get the FluMist® Vaccine
One of the most common misconceptions we hear at Ocean Medical Practice is:
“We left it too late this year.”
Fortunately, this is rarely the case.
Influenza activity usually occurs in multiple waves throughout winter and can continue well into September or even October.
If your child has not yet been vaccinated, getting vaccinated now is still worthwhile.
Protection develops approximately two weeks after vaccination, meaning children vaccinated today can still be protected against influenza circulating later in the season.
If influenza continues spreading through local schools, childcare centres and sporting clubs—as it often does throughout winter—vaccination remains one of the best decisions you can make for your family.
Why Choose FluMist®?
Many children dislike injections.
For some families, fear of needles is the biggest reason influenza vaccination gets delayed.
FluMist® offers an excellent alternative.
Instead of an injection, a small amount of vaccine is gently sprayed into each nostril.
The entire process usually takes only a few seconds.
Most children tolerate the nasal spray extremely well, making vaccination far less stressful for both children and parents.
What Is FluMist®?
FluMist® is a live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV).
Rather than being injected into the arm, it is administered as a nasal spray.
The weakened influenza viruses contained within the vaccine stimulate the immune system to produce protective antibodies without causing influenza illness in healthy children.
The vaccine is updated each year to match the influenza strains expected to circulate during the Australian flu season.
Who Can Receive Free FluMist®?
Eligible children include:
- Children aged 2 to 17 years
- Those meeting current NSW eligibility criteria
- Children assessed by one of our GPs as medically suitable
Before vaccination, our experienced doctors will carefully review your child’s medical history to ensure FluMist® is appropriate.
When FluMist® May Not Be Suitable
Although FluMist® is appropriate for many healthy children, some children require an injectable influenza vaccine instead.
FluMist® may not be recommended for children who:
- have severely weakened immune systems
- are receiving chemotherapy
- have certain immune disorders
- have recently taken influenza antiviral medication
- have severe or uncontrolled asthma
- are experiencing active wheezing
- have other medical conditions identified during assessment
If FluMist® is unsuitable, our doctors will discuss alternative influenza vaccination options.
Why Influenza Vaccination Is So Important
Influenza vaccination helps reduce the risk of:
Influenza infection
Vaccinated children are less likely to become infected.
Severe illness
Vaccination reduces the chance of developing severe influenza requiring hospital treatment.
Hospitalisation
Studies consistently show influenza vaccination lowers hospital admission rates among children.
Influenza complications
Vaccination decreases the likelihood of pneumonia and other serious complications.
Transmission
Vaccinated children are less likely to spread influenza to family members and classmates.
Serious Complications of Influenza
Many people recover from influenza within one to two weeks.
However, influenza can occasionally lead to significant complications.
Pneumonia
Influenza can directly infect the lungs or lead to secondary bacterial pneumonia requiring antibiotics or hospital care.
Ear infections
Children commonly develop painful middle ear infections following influenza.
Asthma flare-ups
Influenza is a common trigger for severe asthma attacks.
Dehydration
High fever and reduced fluid intake may result in dehydration, particularly in younger children.
Febrile seizures
Some young children experience seizures triggered by high fever.
Hospitalisation
Thousands of Australian children require hospital treatment for influenza each year.
Vaccination significantly reduces the risk of these complications.
Why Children Play Such a Big Role in Influenza Spread
Children are excellent at sharing viruses.
Schools, childcare centres, dance classes, swimming lessons and sporting clubs provide ideal environments for influenza transmission.
One child with influenza may infect:
- brothers and sisters
- parents
- grandparents
- newborn babies
- pregnant women
- teachers
- teammates
- elderly neighbours
Vaccinating children therefore helps protect the entire Eastern Suburbs community.
